Tenerife with kids

Families come back to the south for one reason: everything is close together and the sea is calm. Here is how to set the week up.

Where to base yourself

Stay in central Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. Both give you sheltered swimming, flat promenades you can push a buggy along, and short distances between the flat, the beach and somewhere to eat — which matters far more than any single attraction.

Avoid basing a young family on the hillside unless you are happy driving every time you leave the flat. The views are wonderful; the logistics with a toddler are not.

The water

The southern beaches are largely sheltered and shallow at the edge, which is exactly what you want with small children. Fañabé, Torviscas and the Los Cristianos town beaches all have gentle entry.

The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean year-round. Children usually mind less than adults do, but a rash vest for the afternoons is a good idea.

Siam Park is in Costa Adeje and has a dedicated children's area alongside the bigger rides, so it works across a range of ages.

Practical things nobody mentions

The sun is stronger than it feels because of the breeze — the wind is the reason people burn here. Hats and shade at midday, always.

Distances are genuinely short: most of what you will do sits within twenty minutes. You can build a good week without a long drive in it.

Self-catering earns its keep with children — a kitchen, a washing machine and space to nap in the afternoon change the whole trip. All our homes have both.

Days out that work with children

Whale and dolphin watching leaves from the southern coast, and the resident pilot whales mean sightings do not depend on luck. Boats are short and calm.

Teide National Park is a genuine wow for children old enough for the drive — the landscape looks like another planet. Go early and take warm layers; it is much colder at altitude.

You can book both through us — see excursions.

Common questions

Is Tenerife good for toddlers?

Yes — the southern beaches are sheltered and shallow at the edge, distances are short, and self-catering with a kitchen and washing machine makes the week much easier.

Do we need a car with children?

Not if you stay in central Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. Both are flat and walkable. Hire one for a couple of days if you want Teide or the north.

When is the best time to go with kids?

The south is reliable year-round. Winter is mild and quiet; spring and autumn give warm sea with fewer crowds than high summer.

Is the sea cold for children?

The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean all year. Most children cope fine, but a rash vest helps for longer afternoons in the water.
